Rehabilitation Management Program

Rob Hoffman, Director of the Rehabilitation Management Program, will be the primary instructor and mentor. Guest speakers will also provide instruction in specific areas.

Five courses comprise the program and are targeted to supervisors, mid-managers, and new or potential executive directors. The courses are:

  • Survival Management Skills for a Dynamic Environment
  • Recruitment and Retention
  • Building Organizations that Last
  • Resource Development
  • Management Boot Camp

Training Prerequisites and Requirements

The participant must

  1. have access to the internet and email
  2. complete post-training field assignments
  3. complete a self-study on Orientation to Rehabilitation Services or equivalent
  4. have support from the organization

Survival Management Skills for a Dynamic Environment

This training program will provide you with some essential management skills focusing on how you communicate with others, performance management (giving feedback, coaching and mentoring others), delegation, problem solving, and building effective teams. The two day course is highly interactive with self-assessment instruments, small group work, role plays, and individual exercises.

  • Communication Style Analysis
  • Performance Expectations
  • Performance Coaching
  • Empowerment and Delegation
  • Solving Problems
  • Building Effective Teams

Recruitment and Retention

Recruitment and retention of qualified staff is an ongoing challenge for community rehabilitation programs. This course will focus on how to recruit needed talent to deliver services demanded by their customers and how to develop a culture that provides supports for employees so they will stay.

Topics include:

  • Ensuring your Hiring Practices are Legal
  • Competency-Based Approach to HR
  • Behavioral Interviewing
  • Does Your Orientation Measure Up?
  • Building the Culture through Values-Based Management
  • Reviewing Performance
  • Diversity and Generational Issues

Building Organizations that Last

This course focuses on practical strategies to develop leadership competencies in setting the vision, building trust with others, and aligning systems, processes, and structure. We will examine the characteristics of effective organizations, effective leaders, and success strategies. A self-assessment of participant’s behavioral style will be utilized focusing on communication and conflict resolution strategies.

  • Pathfinding: Values and Vision
  • Aligning Processes And Systems in the Organization
  • Change Management
  • Ethics
  • Conflict Management
  • Leadership Profiles

This course may be taken as an individual seminar or as a required course in the Rehabilitation Management Program


Resource Development

Developing internal financial resources and external community resources will be the focus of this course. Managers will learn how to determine the cost of the services provided by their organization followed by how to market the services. The financial management process will also cover cash flow analysis, breakeven analysis, and ratio analysis. Accounting basics will be taught before the class meets using web based instruction.

In the marketing segment, participants will focus on a customer-centered business approach, utilize cost-benefit analysis in marketing, analyze competing services to determine the best market position, and explore various promotional methods. Web-based instruction will also be utilized to introduce participants to basic marketing terminology and concepts.

  • Cost accounting
  • Understanding financial reports and projections
  • Pricing new services and breakeven analysis
  • Cash flow analysis
  • Ratio analysis
  • Customer-driven marketing process
  • Market segmentation
  • Features, advantages, and benefits
  • 5 P's in marketing
